NEWS
The monumental Church history narrative series Saints is coming to a close with the publication of its fourth and final volume. Spanning a period of 65 years, from 1955-2020, the final installment concludes by telling the increasingly global history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the message of the Restored Gospel is βsounded in every ear.β Scheduled for release on October 29th, details of the volume by its editors can be read here.
While Brigham Young elicits no shortage of divergent opinions among those who know of him, few have come to know him on a more personal level than Church history scholar, LaJean Purcell Caruth. Possessing the rare ability to read and transcribe 19th century shorthand, Caruth has personally transcribed over 1.2 million words of Brigham Youngβs and produced a flurry of scholarship in the meantime. βBrigham Young is a much more understanding, caring and likable person, and spoke with much, much greater power, according to the shorthand record.β she says.
Over 6,000 Latter-day Saints, representing over 400 congregations from several states, participated in relief efforts from the destructive impact of Hurricane Helene. Joining the labors of others looking to provide assistance and support to those in need, members of the ChurchΒ βspent more than 77,000 combined hours mucking out flooded homes, clearing debris, removing downed trees and tarping roofs.β These efforts will continue to be sustained in organized ways in response to the many storms which have recently wrecked havoc across the American South.
In an incredibly rare event, a new Mormon fundamentalist temple was recently dedicated on October 13th, roughly an hour south of Independence in Humansville, MO. Known as βThe Ranch,β the ~400 person community is unique in its makeup as it is composed of practitioners from many distinct fundamentalist groups who intermarry, practice forms of consecration, and have combined their labors to build a Kirtland-esque style temple. The lead-up to the dedication included firesides, temple prep sessions, a Feast of Trumpets service, and an open house. From October 16-23, the group will observe the Feast of Tabernacles.
