(also, a thread of my diss was about "time" in gothic novels and the strangeness of it in terms of this 19thC railroad/secular time that we live in the wake of. i drew on charles taylor and others to think about gothic time as a fusion of secular time and liturgical time, though reading your piece here, i wonder if there'd be something fruitful in expanding/complicating that argument with your insight about time and relationships...often in these gothic novels time is wrinkled through supernatural beings, ghosts of wronged ancestors, saints, demons, etc)
That sounds so interesting re: your interpretation of gothic time! And that is really interesting thinking through the topic of the gothic with time and relationships--it's not quite the same time period that you studied, but I've been (re)listening to the soundtrack of The Secret Garden musical and the theme of ghosts and relationships in regards to time and healing/redemption is a major part of that story. Time is one of those topics I could think for ages about, and my understanding has changed over the years and I'm sure it will continue to change.
