Seeking Assistant Art Curator
You are invited to be part of our amazing staff! Wayfare seeks the talents of an assistant art curator to help source art for our print and digital published works. This is a volunteer position, but you will be well rewarded with friendship and fun when you join the Wayfare staff.
Qualified applicants will have a broad survey understanding of art and art history; a basic familiarity with artists, styles, eras, and regions; and most importantly the ability and persistence to research and sort through digital museum collections or other online art libraries. A degree in an art-related field is not necessary—more important is passion, taste, and a willingness to learn.
Job description: The assistant art curator will work with our lead curator to find high resolution images of art for all of our digital essays, and help as needed to source art for our print essays. Art curators attend bi-weekly publishing meetings to discuss art needs, as well as other staff training meetings as possible. We select art from the public domain or from living artists where permission can be obtained. Art will be selected based on its artistic quality, its graphic suitability for a magazine publication, and its fit with the written word. Art is selected not simply to illustrate an essay, but to enhance its message. The time commitment is about one hour per week. The term for this position is one year, with the option to renew as many times as desired. That said, we understand that life is unexpected and of course we can be flexible with regard to time and schedule constraints.
Please send a short statement explaining your interest and qualifications along with a sample of art that you might select to accompany your favorite Wayfare essay. Address correspondence to Rachel Jardine at rachel.frandsen.jardine@gmail.com with “Wayfare Art Curator” in the subject line.
