Saved in the Storm
In 2012, I was an undergraduate computer science student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Final exams were taking place in the next few days and my friends and I were studying hard. We were feeling stressed as we really wanted to do well on our exams and there was only limited time to prepare.
One night we were in the underground computer room studying, and it began to snow outside. It started snowing around 9:00 pm that evening, and the snow kept falling. That didn’t bother us as we were used to the snow, so we continued to study. Around midnight my friends left to go home. However, I wanted to review and practice several more computer exercises so I stayed in the computer room and kept studying. By 2:00 am my eyes and mind was getting tired and I knew I needed to go home.
When I walked outside I was astonished! The campus was deserted. There was a foot of snow on the ground and it was still snowing, although not as heavily as before. The snow gave an appearance of being both wonderous and desolate. I was shivering as I walked across campus towards my apartment. My feet were getting wet in the deep snow. It was very cold and the wind was blowing. I put my hands in my coat pockets, put my head down to stay warm, and kept walking.
After a few minutes I reached Bulldog Boulevard in front of our school campus. That’s when my miracle occurred. As I was getting ready to cross the street, I heard a loud voice say, “STOP”. I looked around to see who said “STOP”, but there was no one else around. While I was eager to get home as quickly as possible, I stopped and didn’t cross the street even though there was a green light. Suddenly, I heard tires screeching sharply, and two cars crashed in the snow in front of me, right in the crosswalk! I knew that if I had walked out into the street I would have been hit by the cars and might have been killed. I was stunned, frightened and grateful! I knew that loud voice that yelled “STOP” was sent by God to protect me. It was a miracle. I’m so grateful to God for His kindness in protecting me and saving my life even though I was thousands of miles from home.
I made it home safely that night and successfully completed my exams. Now, many years later, every time it snows, I pause and smile. I think of God’s kindness and love for me and for all of His children. He really does know us individually, and is aware of what is happening in our lives, wherever we may be.
