Eliza Elizabeth Everly Evermore was my best friend for two months, one week and three days.

Then she told me she was leaving for the forest and she’d never be back.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m moving to the forest with my family.”

“Why?”

“My dad lost his job and my mom said we can make do in the woods better than here in the city so we’re moving.”

I stared at her. She and her family moved here only just barely from Florida. She had orange hair and giant t-shirts that came down to her knees. She drew endless pictures of rainbow colored bears. She said she used to be obsessed with whales but now it was bears. All kinds of bears. She liked the exact same fairy books that I liked, and gave me her oatmeal raisin cookies at lunch. I loved her.

“Do you know how to live in the woods?” I asked.

Eliza shrugged. “We’re getting a tent.”
